Global Financial Reset Coming: ‘Deal Being Made Between All Central Banks’

There is an unprecedented reset coming to world financial markets and if you’ve been paying attention it’s impossible to ignore the signs. In fact mega-investment funds, governments and central banks have been secretly buying up and storing physical gold in anticipation of an event that will leave the U.S. dollar effectively worthless and governments around the world angling for a new global currency mechanism, according to mining executive Keith Neumeyer.

But before the reset can happen Neumeyer, who recently founded First Mining Finance and has partnered with billionaire alternative asset investors like Eric Sprott and Rick Rule, says that foreign creditors must first deleverage their U.S. dollar debt, a move that is happening right now and is evidenced by the recent strength of the U.S. dollar.

Once these U.S. debt holders unwind their positions, however, the dollar will be allowed to crash and we should prepare for a total financial, economic and monetary realignment.

(Watch the full interview at Future Money Trends)

With the central banks now buying gold… which is quite unique… we haven’t seen that  in our lifetimes… they’ve always been sellers of gold and now they’re buyers of gold… I think there will be a reset of the financial industry…

I think China is being allowed to accumulate gold purposefully by the American government… I believe that the Chinese need to own at least the same amount as the U.S. owns before this reset occurs. I think that there’s some kind of deal that’s being made between all the central banks behind the scenes and that’s why you’re seeing governments accumulating the metal.

I do believe there will be some kind of new currency created with the backing… and it might not be a direct backing of the metal… but it’ll be some kind of blend of currency.. it could be through SDR’s… Special Drawing Rights… or some type of mechanism… I think that’s where we’re going.

And when that reset occurs I think gold will be left to rise… and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see three…four… five thousand dollar gold over the next five years.

Because the price of gold has been suppressed to allow governments and central banks to accumulate it cheaply, Neumeyer sees opportunity in the mining industry and that’s why his latest mineral bank project is mimicking their actions and buying up physical mining assets around the world.

And though Western mainstream media pundits argue that the recent strength of the U.S. stock market and the U.S. dollar are proof positive that an economic recovery has taken hold, Neumeyer says exactly the opposite is happening.

The reason for the recent rise in the value of the world’s reserve currency, he suggests, is a result of the massive unwinding of U.S. debt as private investors and governments around the globe know a rush for the exits is coming soon:

The view on the strength of the dollar recently is the fact that it’s short-term. You’ve got so much U.S. debt out there and governments are now getting rid of their U.S. debt and converting all the debt to local debt… that’s causing a huge demand for dollars in order to make that conversion, so this whole dollar rally is basically a deleveraging against the U.S. dollar… you’re not seeing that story showing up anywhere in North America.

Once the world is deleveraged than the U.S. dollar… then basically the U.S. dollar will crash and that will be the beginning of this new reset.

Everything, of course, is very hush-hush but, as Neumeyer explains, most of the influential players involved know exactly what is going on and they are making their moves right now to ensure they survive the coming financial reset:

The gold accumulation that’s going on… this is gold that’s outside of the system… you don’t hear about it… these are big sovereign wealth funds, these are government funds, these are banks that are buying the physical metal… they are very intimately involved in the sector and they know what’s going on.

Definitely world governments and central banks around the world are unwinding their U.S. debt. They’re trying to bring their debt home and that’s causing the upside pressure on the dollar.

If Neumeyer is right, and all the signs suggest his assessment is fairly accurate, then the recent strength of the U.S. dollar will be short-lived. Once deleveraging by governments and central banks has been completed they will unleash an economic, financial and monetary storm that will change the very fabric of the global order.

The consequences are difficult to predict, but given that these entities have been buying up gold like their lives depended on it, the notion of an ounce of the precious metal being valued at $5,000 per ounce isn’t out of the question.

The U.S.-led coalition is preparing to expand its air strike campaign into the city of Tikrit where Iraqi forces, backed by Iranians, have stalled in their efforts to reclaim the hometown of Saddam Hussein from the self-proclaimed Islamic State.

Two U.S. officials told The Daily Beast that the United States is awaiting a formal request from the Iraqi government for the strikes. Once they receive that request, it could be only a matter of days before the attacks begin.

“The preparatory work is probably already done. The [U.S. military] has started to bring in more assets for a Tikrit air support campaign,” an adviser to the U.S. government tasked with monitoring and engaging with Iraqi officials told The Daily Beast. “Unless there is an impediment on the Iraqi side, and I don’t see it happening, the campaign could begin within days.”

In an interview with Reuters that was published Wednesday, Iraqi President Fouad Massoum said air strikes would begin soon.

“The Iraqi government along with residents of the area wanted an active contribution from the international coalition,” Massoum told Reuters.

An American air strike campaign in Tikrit would mark an important shift in the ISIS war. Iraqi officials did not engage their American counterparts before they launched the offensive on Tikrit March 1, with Iranian generals and tanks by their side. And the American military has long insisted that it wouldn’t coordinate too closely with the Iranians, even as both forces fight a common enemy in Iraq: ISIS.

The top United Nations investigator on torture, Juan Mendez, has been alleging that Washington is dragging its heels when it comes to granting him access to visits of federal prisons and allowing him to talk with detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Mendez’s biggest criticism has been the US’s solitary confinement policies and whether they are a violation of human rights laws.

Ben Swann speaks with constitutional rights attorney Pardiss Kebriaei about the tensions growing between the State Department and the United Nations.

The Pentagon said it will refuse the United Nations special rapporteur on torture from interviewing or even meeting detainees held at the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay. The UN’s Juan E. Mendez called for increased access to the prison last week.

The Guardian reported Sunday that the Obama administration had reaffirmed its commitment to secrecy at the notorious detention center following a visit to Gitmo by a handful of new US senators who are supportive of the prison.

Méndez, the UN’s special rapporteur on torture, “has been invited to visit Guantánamo; however, he will not be permitted to interview detainees,” Army Lieutenant Colonel Myles Caggins, a Pentagon spokesman, told the Guardian.

Last week, Méndez said he has been offered certain terms attached to a Gitmo visit, yet he, like his predecessor in 2004, declined to accept based on stipulations he deemed too narrow.

When Afghan officials had to gather $5 million in ransom to free a diplomat held by Al Qaeda, they dug deep, according to the New York Times, and gave U.S. money given to them by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

According to the Times, Afghanistan received monthly cash deliveries from the CIA to the presidential palace in Kabul. Afghan officials said they had squirreled away about $1 million of that fund.

Al Qaeda was rejuvenated after receiving that money.

Atiyah Adb al-Rahman, Al Qaeda’s general manager, wrote to Osama bin Laden in June 2010 claiming that the money would be used for weapons and other operations. “God blessed us with a good amount of money this month,” he wrote.

In a letter back, bin Laden expressed concern about the newfound wealth:

“There is a possibility — not a very strong one — that the Americans are aware of the money delivery, and that they accepted the arrangement of the payment on the basis that the money will be moving under air surveillance,” bin Laden wrote.

But, the Times pointed out, the money wasn’t a trap: “It was just another in a long list of examples of how the United States, largely because of poor oversight and loose financial controls, has sometimes inadvertently financed the very militants it is fighting.”

This is not the first report of “ghost money,” off-the-books cash being funneled in secret to the Afghan government. New York Times reporter Matthew Rosenberg exposed “America’s conflicting priorities” in a 2013 report.

It’s apparently clear that America’s current foreign policy strategy is in major need of reform. If America is waging a war on global terrorism, then why are we funding our enemies?

Reports from investigative reporters like Rosenberg and Ben Swann have both presented cases regarding the U.S. government’s involvement in funding Islamic terrorist groups. See Ben Swann’s report on the Origin of ISIS.

BenSwann.com’s Joshua Cook asked award-winning journalist and researcher Nizar Nayouf his thoughts on the New York Times report.

Though Nayouf doesn’t consider himself an expert in the affairs of Afghanistan and “al-Qaeda” in Afghanistan, he considers this story very familiar because he said it mirrors what’s happening now in Syria.

Iraq has said that it welcomes participation from Iran in rebuilding the country’s infrastructure.

Iraqi Minister for Reconstruction and Housing Tariq al-Khikani has urged Iranian firms to play a bigger role in his country’s reconstruction for which Baghdad aims to spend $400 billion.

Press TV reports: Iran is currently a key ally of Iraq in the region, where bilateral ties have seen a complete turnaround from sworn enemies under the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Annual trade stands at $12 billion which the two countries plan to raise to $20 billion.

“The Iraqi government has envisaged $400 billion for rebuilding the country’s infrastructure in which Iran can have a significant share,” Iraq’s Deputy Commerce Minister Walid Habib al-Mousavi said in Tehran.

He made the comments in a meeting with Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mines and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh who called for serious efforts to expand bilateral cooperation.

The two sides discussed supply of foodstuff and other basic goods to Iraq as well as construction of refineries and cooperation in banking and auto industry sectors.

Netmazadeh expressed hope that Iraq could develop an “Arab brand of car with the cooperation of Iranian automakers”.

The minister said the two sides also agreed to accelerate cooperation between their central banks.

Truth in Media: The Origin of ISIS

Truth in Media: The Origin of ISIS

Truth in Media: The Origin of ISIS

Ben Swann | BenSwann.com

In the latest episode of Truth in Media, Ben Swann investigates the origins of the militant group referred to as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The name ISIS is one that every American knows,” Swann said “The biggest threat to our national security since Al-Qaeda, right? They are a brutal, savage group known for public beheadings and mass executions. They are the face of the new war on terror.”

Swann pointed out that while the U.S. Military is currently conducting airstrikes in Syria, in a supposed attempt to take out ISIS targets, the White House and U.S. military leaders are discussing possible boots on the ground in Iraq. These talks are arising just three years after President Obama declared that the war in Iraq was over.

Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told USA Today that in order to defeat ISIS, he believes the United States is looking at “a 30-year-war.”

As the U.S. goes to war in an attempt to defeat yet another terrorist group, the biggest question is: Who exactly is ISIS and where did they come from?

Angela Keaton, the founder of Antiwar.com, said that ISIS is “entirely a creation of the United States’ behavior in Iraq.”

That’s how we got to where we are, because of war, because of occupation, because of torture,” Keaton said. “The United States government completely destabilized and wrecked Iraq. They caused it to fail miserably and that is entirely the fault of the United States government. There is no one else to blame.”

Swann explained that when the U.S. first invaded Iraq, it “blew the country apart.” By destroying the existing government, toppling Saddam Hussein, and destroying the infrastructure, the U.S. “left behind a power vacuum” that would never have existed under Hussein.

Daniel McAdams, the executive director of the Ron Paul Institute, said that the impact caused by the actions of the United States is a “historical fact that media just won’t discuss.”

This has to do with U.S. action in the region, which destroyed the infrastructure, which destroyed Iraq society, which destroyed the Iraqi government,” McAdams said. He explained that while there were a lot of people who weren’t “as happy as larks” while living under Saddam Hussein, they also weren’t at odds with Hussein in the same way they were with the government established by the U.S.

The militant group ISIS was formed as a small insurgent group in Iraq in 2006. Swann noted that while they tried to create problems for the U.S. military, they had no money and no real ability to recruit.

It wasn’t until 2009 that ISIS shifted its focus from Iraq, where it was largely unsuccessful in developing a foothold, and focused on the civil war in Syria,” Swann said.

While in Syria, ISIS still struggled to gain a foothold. Swann attributed this to the fact that two larger groups fighting against President Bashar al-Assad were overpowering them: al-Nusra Front – or al-Qaeda – and the Free Syrian Army.

Then, came a pivotal moment that most Americans aren’t even aware of,” Swann said. “In June 2013, a Northern General for the Free Syrian Army spoke out on Al Jazeera Qatar and stated that if international forces did not send weapons, the rebels attempting to overthrow Syrian president Bashar al-Assad would lose their war within a month.”

Swann noted that just months before this occurred he had personally confronted President Obama on the issue of why the U.S. was covertly funding Syrian rebels. Although Obama acted as if he was proceeding with caution, politicians such as Senator John McCain demanded action.

Within a matter of weeks of the Syrian general making his plea for international help, the U.S., the Saudis, Jordan, Qatar, Turkey and Israel began providing weapons, training and money to so-called rebel groups like the Free Syrian Army,” Swann said.

In September 2013, American media outlets began reporting that weapons were being given to Syrian rebels. CNN reported that while the weapons are not “American-made,” they were “funded and organized by the CIA.”

However, Swann said that things began to fall apart when less than one year after the U.S. supplied Syrian “freedom fighters” with weapons, those weapons ended up in the hands of ISIS fighters.

One in five Germans believe that revolution, not reform, is the only way for living standards in Germany to be improved, a new study by the Free University of Berlin suggests.

The report, entitled ‘Against state and capital – for the revolution’ found among other trends that a staggering 62% of Germans quizzed by researchers believe they live in an imperfect democracy where the economy has more power than the electorate, and a third believe that capitalism leads to poverty and hunger.

The 650-page report revealed that 48% are concerned that a deep-rooted xenophobia exists in modern day Germany, a feeling possibly based on the rise of the anti-immigration organisation Pegida, which has gained worldwide coverage in the past few months. Marches by the movement, whose name stands for Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West, have taken place in several major German cities, although many were dwarfed by counter-protests. Despite this, around 20% of respondents fear that a new form of fascism will rise in Germany.

Overall, the researchers noted a growing suspicion of central government and of the mainstream media, as well as an openness to conspiracy theories.

“Political danger is looming at the fringes,” the authors of the report warn, “not least through old resentments and new irrationalism that has declared war on reason.”

Greece Will Not Be Treated as a Debt Colony That Should Suffer

Greece isn’t playing negotiating games with the EU, says Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis as he readies to face his counterparts in Brussels Monday, unwilling to agree to more of the same austerity medicine.

Greece is determined not to be “treated as a debt colony that should suffer what it must. The principle of the greatest austerity for the most depressed economy would be quaint if it did not cause so much unnecessary suffering,” Varoufakis wrote in a New York Times op-ed, published Monday.

The finance minister called the talks between Greece, EU finance ministers and central bankers, to be resumed Monday, a “turning point for Europe’s unfolding experiment with monetary union.”

Greece’s is one of the main players in the eurozone debt crisis, which began to unravel in 2009 and show the weakness of the then 18-member euro currency. The currency, which began circulating in 1999, was meant to make the EU a financial bloc to rival the US. But by banding together, no individual country of the union was safeguarded against the woes of another. In 2009, worries that Greece would default on its debt forced the EU to bailout the economy. Two bailouts were paid in 2010 and 2014 totaling €240 billion.

The new Syriza-led Greek government does not agree to the eurozone bailout under the same constraints as the former government.

“The great difference between this government and previous Greek governments is twofold: We are determined to clash with mighty vested interests in order to reboot Greece and gain our partners’ trust,” Varoufakis said.

In total, Greece is more than €317 billion in debt, which is more than 175 percent its annual gross domestic product.

Finances are dwindling. Greece needs to negotiate with EU policymakers by February 28 in order to receive the next tranche of bailout funds. Athens and Brussels have been embroiled in financial rescue package talks since the new government won a snap election on January 25 on the promise of ending austerity.

Syriza is instead trying to renegotiate its bailout with its Troika of lenders- the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank, and the European Commission. The Greek government is asking for more time to negotiate, and wants a six-month bridging loan, not an extension of the old program, which has kept Greece in recession for more than 6 years.

No red lines will be crossed, and no games will be played, Greece just wants to start growing again, Varoufakis wrote.

UN Finds Credible Ties Between ISIS And Israeli Defense Forces

Traditionally such groups as ISIS have relied upon Saudi Arabia for support

“We’ve always been at war with Eastasia!”

So goes the famous line from George Orwell’s novel 1984. And so, too, can our forces today claim over a number of groups we find in the Middle East. In many ways, the enemy of my enemy is my friend when dealing with the Middle East, and in the battle between ancient tribal groups, when you lack an enemy, sometimes you need to make one.

In a new report from the UN, it is revealed that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) were maintaining regular contact with members of the so-called Islamic State since May of 2013. Initial reports from the IDF stated that this was only for medical care for civilians, but that story fell apart when the UN observers identified direct contact between IDF forces and ISIS soldiers, including giving medical care to ISIS fighters. Observations even included the transfer of two crates from the IDF to ISIS forces, the contents of which have not been confirmed at this time. Further the UN report identified what the Syrians label a crossing point of forces between Israel and ISIS, a point of concern brought before the UN Security Council. This report from the UN strengthens the claims by the Syrian regime that Israel is heavily involved in operations within the nation.

This is part of a continuing pattern of Israeli support for the Islamic State. It was only two months ago that Israel attacked Syrian forces in opposition to ISIS forces. Israeli attacks even killed an Iranian military adviser for the Syrian military just two weeks ago. The U.S.’s financing of ISIS, part of the effort against Syrian president Assad, is well documented, as well. That the efforts to undermine the Assad regime were in turn strengthening the same terrorist group which recently set a Jordanian pilot on fire to set an example is conveniently ignored by the higher up military command.

When the United States began operations against ISIS, Israeli high command seemed reluctant to give any support and called the move a mistake. The support of ISIS fits in with Israeli concerns in the region, namely that of Syria and Iran, and U.S. opposition to ISIS has put the United States in the awkward position of once again arming the enemies we will be fighting tomorrow.

Syria and Iran both pose a threat to Israel with their sizable conventional forces and political clout in the region, in much the same way Iraq was before the elimination of Saddam Hussein. With the toppling of Saddam, pieces of concern remain, and Israel appears to still maintain the old axiom that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Supporting ISIS for Israel enables them to eliminate two issues at once, only once Syria is no longer a concern — a move which would in turn neutralize Iranian influence in the region — Israel then would turn its attention to ISIS, bolstered by other anti-ISIS forces from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United States. That would take several more years, however, during which time ISIS would continue to grow in both size and power. By the time they turn their attention to ISIS, it is quite possible that ISIS would have toppled the nations which Israel is counting on for support of such an operation. Too little, too late.

Traditionally such groups as ISIS have relied upon Saudi Arabia for support, but Saudi money is conspicuously absent from ISIS coffers. Unlike groups before, ISIS has gone self-financed, relying upon prostitution, slavery and oil for its financial well-being. This, in turn, removes the protections which Saudi Arabia has relied upon for almost a century to prevent such organizations from turning on the House of Saud and potentially conquering the kingdom which is now in the sights of the Islamic State.

In turn, the ISIS forces have all but forced the Kurds to become a mighty force unto themselves, much to the anger of neighboring Turkey. Rather than helping to fight ISIS, Turkey is instead attacking the forces standing in opposition to ISIS. The entire situation has spiraled out of control.

In effect, there is no side to support here, as each side is being supported at once in opposition to the other side. By enabling the creation of ISIS, we have taken an already unstable situation and poured gasoline over it. Now we are facing a true threat, not from ISIS or Iran or Syria, but against our own arrogance. We have been blinded to the death and destruction created by our actions in the Middle East.

We once were respected throughout the region, as neutral peacebrokers, the nation which oversaw the breakup of the Barbary pirates and a country which became eternal friends with the people of Iran when all of Europe ignored them. Now we are Israel’s expected muscle, to carry out their dirty work in an effort to destabilize the region and de-power those the tiny nation views as a threat. They will support anyone, if it meets a short-term goal, even if the result is a plot more complex and ridiculous than an episode of “Passions. This can, and will cost them long-term.

The United States cannot be party to this. Whatever the political and economic cost, the U.S. must disengage from all sides in the Middle East, before it is too late.

Polish Farmers Blockade Motorways Across Country

This week thousands of Polish family farmers from the Solidarity trade union turned out to protest in over 50 locations across the country. Over 150 tractors have been blockading the A2 motorway into Warsaw since the 3rd February and hundreds more have closed roads and are picketing governmental offices in other regions. The farmers are vowing to continue the struggle until the government agrees to enter talks with the union and commit to addressing what they see as a crisis in Polish agriculture.

These actions represent a dramatic escalation of protests that have been simmering across the country over the last year. Edward Kosmal, chairman of the farmers protest committee for West-Pomeranian Region said:

We are ready for dialogue. We look forward to meeting with you Prime Minister and beginning a comprehensive government commitment to solving the problems of Polish agriculture. If you do not enter into a dialogue with the Union, we would be forced to tighten our forms of protest.

The four key demands of the farmers are:

  • Land rights – implement regulation to prevent land-grabs by Western companies and to protect family farmers rights to land – (NB. From 2016 foreign buyers will be legally able to buy Polish land).
  • Legalize direct sales of farm produce – the government must take action to improve farmers’ position in the market, including the adoption of a law to facilitate direct sales of processed and unprocessed farm products (NB. Poland has the most exclusionary policies in Europe around on-farm processing of food products and direct sales, which make it impossible for family farmers to compete with bigger food companies).
  • Extend inheritance laws to include land under lease as a fully legal form of land use.
  • Ban the cultivation and sale of Genetically Modified Organisms in Poland

Quotes from Solidarity farmers trade union press releases on the 2nd and 3rd of February:

“We demand a legal ban on GM crops in Poland. The value of Polish agriculture, unique in Europe, is the unpolluted environment and high quality food production. That’s decisive concerning our competitiveness in global markets.”

“We are entitled to conclude that the European Union blindness deprives people in our country from thinking in terms of the importance of development for Polish citizens, and thus the Polish economy”

“We demand the introduction of legislation that will protect Polish land from exploitation by foreign capital! Agricultural land cannot be sold to commercial companies. It’s part of Polish territory. Once sold it will be lost.”

A former Al-Qaeda member has revealed a strong connection between the terrorist group and the Saudi Royal family in the 1990s. More notably, he alleges that Saudi princes and terrorists discussed a plan to shoot Air Force One out of the sky.

The revelations came in the form of a testimony, delivered from a maximum-security prison, where Zacarias Moussaoui is incarcerated.

According to the New York Times, Moussaoui submitted the claim on his own initiative. He sent a letter to the judge presiding over the lawsuit filed by family members of 9/11 victims against the government of Saudi Arabia.

And so, for two days last October, lawyers were permitted for the first time to interview the terrorist at the federal prison – the most secure facility in the federal system, in Florence, Colorado. He gave a damning report that included very prominent members within the royal family, including three princes he says were all Al-Qaeda donors.

The testimony was finalized on Monday.

“This radical expansion of national security powers is not sound security policy and presents a real danger to Canadians,” says civil liberties advocate.

Canada introduced on Friday new anti-terrorism legislation critics say gives spy agencies sweeping powers that threaten the public’s civil liberties.

The legislation is the Anti-terrorism Act 2015, which Ottawa Citizen reporter Ian MacLeod described as “the most dramatic package of new laws since the Anti-terrorism Act of 2001.”

Among the provisions of the legislation are that it would expand the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS)’s powers to “disrupt terrorism offenses and terrorist activity;” make it easier for law enforcement agencies to carry out preventive detentions, and allow them for longer time, make it easier to federal agencies to share information, and give law enforcement agencies power “to disrupt terrorism offenses and terrorist activity, according to a government fact sheet.

Defending the measures in Richmond Hill, Ontario on Friday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, “Over the last few years a great evil has been descending over our world.”

“Canadians are targeted by these terrorists for no other reason than that we are Canadians,” he said. “They want to harm us because they hate our society and our values. They hate pluralism, they hate tolerance and the freedom we enjoy.”

Reuters reports that passage of the legislation “is assured because the Conservatives have a majority in Parliament.”

Reacting to its introduction, Micheal Vonn, Policy Director of the BC Civil Liberties Association, stated, “This radical expansion of national security powers is not sound security policy and presents a real danger to Canadians. Our national security agencies have shamefully inadequate oversight and are hostile to accountability. Canada has utterly failed to respond to the urgent need for national security oversight and instead, proposes an unprecedented expansion of powers that will harm innocent Canadians and not increase our public safety.”

“Our national security agencies have shamefully inadequate oversight and are hostile to accountability.”
—Michael Vonn, BC Civil Liberties Association”This new law will impose a broad chill on legitimate political speech without enhancing public safety, and is likely unconstitutional,” Vonn added.

Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien expressed concerns with the legislation as well. He said in a statement issued Friday, “This Act would seemingly allow departments and agencies to share the personal information of all individuals, including ordinary Canadians who may not be suspected of terrorist activities, for the purpose of detecting and identifying new security threats. It is not clear that this would be a proportional measure that respects the privacy rights of Canadians.”

Echoing Vonn’s concerns regarding inadequate oversight, Therrien expressed unease “that the proposed changes to information sharing authorities are not accompanied by measures to fill gaps in the national security oversight regime. Three national security agencies in Canada are subject to dedicated independent oversight of all of their activities. However, most of the organizations that would receive and use more personal information under the legislation introduced today are not,” he stated.

Toronto-based journalist Steven Zhou made similar observations to Vonn, writing earlier this week at Ricochet, “A state apparatus that can pry into the lives of its atomized citizenry is indicative of totalitarian tendencies, threatening not just the quality of democratic practice, but, given the proliferation and importance of electronic communication, liberty itself,” he wrote.

“It’s within this overall context that mass spying and policing powers will be expanded in Canada, in addition to many other countries, who have also, subsequent to incidents such as the Charlie Hebdo massacre, fallen prey to the politics of fear,” Zhou wrote.

Several European associations including PEN International, Open Rights Group and European Digital Rights addressed such expanding power in the wake of the Hebdo attack, issuing an open letter to world governments in which they wrote, “Moments like this need effective and considered responses and not unwise and restrictive increases in government and law enforcement powers.”

They added that “more surveillance is not necessarily better surveillance, and increasing the scope and scale of government spying or interfering with freedom of expression is not the answer to all our security or societal problems;” rather, they continue, “we must hold strong to the values of the society that we want to live in, or we risk undermining those values in the name of saving them.”

Since the coup against the elected Yanukovich government in Ukraine on February 22, 2014, an international crisis has been brewing — involving the U.S., E.U., and Russia, and closely linked to the expansion of NATO since the 90s. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created by the U.S. and Western European nations to militarily counter the Soviet Union. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, NATO was not disbanded but was significantly enlarged.

At a meeting on January 10, 2015 two speakers, authorities well equipped to explore this subject, discussed the background causes of the Ukraine troubles (now drawing the U.S. and Russia closer to possible military confrontation). Speaking were Dr. John J. Mearsheimer, co-director of Program on International Security Policy at University of Chicago; and Rick Rozoff, manager of the Stop NATO website.

Dr. Mearsheimer spoke of the real reason of the crisis: “We are interested in peeling away Ukraine and Georgia from Russia’s orbit and making [them] bulwarks of the West, right on Putin’s doorstep.” Mearsheimer goes on to remind us how sensitive big powers are to that kind of thing with the way the U.S. reacted to the prospect of Soviet missiles in Cuba in 1962. American foreign policy, rightly or wrongly, was obsessed with upholding the Monroe Doctrine declaring U.S. hegemony in the Western Hemisphere.

Dr. Mearsheimer and Rick Rozoff fleshed out the three parts to the West’s strategy vis-a-vis Russia and its immediate neighborhood in Eastern Europe: 1) NATO Expansion, 2) European Union Expansion, 3) Promote Democracy (meaning putting in power leaders who are pro-Western and anti-Russian).

Rozoff provided the background narrative to the steady march of NATO expansion since the 90s. In 1999 NATO held its 50th anniversary summit in Washington, D.C., while at the same time conducting its first war (to break up Yugoslavia, the first war in Europe since WWII). NATO then went on to conduct wars in three continents. Now, US-controlled NATO has 28 full members and 39 partner countries, nearly half of the nations in the UN.

The April, 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest was followed then by a war between Georgia and Russia in August, 2008, precipitated by plans to make Georgia part of NATO.

“It’s clear,” Rozoff noted, “that policy makers in the United States and also their NATO allies in Europe were envisioning some sort of continental system in Europe…There’s not a single European nation…that has not either been a full member of NATO or a member of the Partnership for Peace program and in many instances several intermediate programs…So what we’re talking about is the entirety of Europe being subordinated to a military bloc controlled from the other side of the Atlantic, and nothing less.”

Both speakers underlined the sobering implications of NATO expansion. Rozoff ended his talk by saying, “I should let you know that both of us panelists objected to the original title that was proposed for this talk which included words to the effect of ‘nuclear war’ or something. However I woke up this morning to see that someone not noted for ever having being tremendously confrontational with the West, former Soviet President Michael Gorbachev, talk about just that prospect”.

French Police: Gun Control Isn’t Working for Us

Charlie Hebdo video screen grab

Following the deaths of two French police officers during the January 7 Charlie Hebdo attack and another officer death during an attack the following day, French police are demanding more guns and guns that are more powerful.

The situation during the Charlie Hebdo attack was very lopsided–in favor of the terrorists–because of current policing and arms policy. Breitbart News reported that “unarmed Paris police officers” were forced to flee when confronted with the armed attackers. UK’s Independent reported that “three policemen arrived [at the scene of the attack] on bikes but had to leave because [the attackers] were armed.” A policeman assigned to the duty of body guard to Charlie Hebdo editor Stephane Charbonnier was killed, and an officer on a mountain bike was gunned down.

The Associated Press reports French police unions met with Interior Ministry officials on January 19, seeking to take the advantage away from terrorists and other attackers. The unions demanded “more” guns and “heavier” guns, as well as “protective gear, better training for first-responders, and more legal tools to guard against terrorists.”

Government Agency Classifies Journalists with Terrorists

New revelations from documents released by whistleblower Edward Snowden indicate the British Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) classifies investigative journalists as a threat, similar to terrorists and hackers.

The Guardian reported on the program which monitored emails to and from journalists working for media organizations in the U.S. and the UK.  In one single day, in less than 10 minutes, the GCHQ collected 70,000 emails, including emails of journalists with the BBC, Reuters, the Guardian, the New York Times, the Sun, NBC, and the Washington Post. The emails were collected through the GCHQ accessing the fiber-optic cables known as “the backbone of the internet.” The communications were then shared with staff on the agencies intranet.

Even more disturbing is a security assessment which listed “investigative journalists” as “a potential threat to security”. The document was shared among intelligence agencies promoting the idea that the activities of journalists were as much of a threat as foreign intelligence, hackers, and criminals. The agencies were specifically concerned with investigate journalists “who specialise in defence-related exposés either for profit or what they deem to be of the public interest.”

Security assessments released by the GCHQ also list journalists between “terrorism” and “hackers”, in some cases listing terrorists as a lower priority than investigative journalists. Terrorism is seen as a moderate threat compared to the work and tactics of investigative journalists. The documents warns journalists and reporters may take “a  formal approach or an informal approach, possibly with off-duty personnel, in their attempts to gain official information to which they are not entitled.”

The Guardian reports that senior editors and lawyers in the UK are demanding the introduction of a freedom of expression law as fears over growing police surveillance granted by the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (Ripa).

The fight for press freedom is not exclusive to the UK, however. Journalists in the US face monitoring by a host of federal agencies, including the NSA. It is also important to remember that President Obama has continuously persecuted whistleblowers and built a reputation around a lack of transparency and unfriendly relations to the press. In 2014 the Columbia Journalism Review reported on the U.S. dropping 13 spots in a global index on freedom. Delphine Halgand, the US Director for Reporters Without Borders, said 2013 was marked by Chelsea Manning’s 35 year sentence and the pursuit of Edward Snowden and journalists such as James Risen.

During the summer of 2014 thirty-eight journalists sent a letter to President Obama calling for more transparency from the White House. The groups accused the President of censorship and a “politically-driven suppression of the news.

Recent research has indicated the problem is getting worse throughout the nation, particularly at the federal level,” wrote David Cuillier, SPJ’s President and the letter’s author. “Journalists are reporting that most federal agencies prohibit their employees from communicating with the press unless the bosses have public relations staffers sitting in on the conversations.

In October 2013 the Committee to Protect Journalist released a report titled “Leak investigations and surveillance in post-9/11 America”. The report covers the Obama Administrations attacks on the free press and implementation of surveillance measures that threaten free and independent journalism. Most recently, USA Today Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page stated that the Obama Administration was more “restrictive” and “dangerous” than any other administration.

It is clear that governments around the world are working to restrict press freedoms and consider those who work to expose the crimes of governments as threats. Totalitarian regimes throughout history have used political assassinations and censorship to silence critics. The United States, and the United Kingdom in 2015 are no different than oppressive regimes of the past.
